SEO Success Is a Matter Of Choice
Posted on February 23, 2007
The primary purpose of search engine optimization is to drive more traffic to your website and to increase the ranking of your website on the search engines in various search terms. Search engine optimization is the process that is meant to convert site visitors into online customers.
However, confusion may have overpowered other webmasters and web marketing so-called specialists. These webmasters believe they can achieve the highest rankings on the search engines on all the keywords that come into their mind. But SEO is not about getting your website listed for all the keywords and keyword phrases you can think of.
Targeted Keywords, Not Overloaded Keywords
Instead of achieving higher rankings on the search engines for all possible keywords, you should try to achieve higher rankings only on the most targeted keywords. In search engine optimization, it the effectiveness of the keywords that matter, not the quantity. Trying to achieve top rankings on the search engines for all keywords and keyword phrases you can think of will mean load of works and waste of time.
Effective search engine optimization is not about getting your website listed on as much keywords as you can think of. SEO is about getting your website listed on the right keywords. Targeted keywords and keyword phrases will drive targeted traffic to your website. Targeted traffic means higher conversion rate for your online business.
Relevant Web Pages, Not Irrelevant Web Content
Search engine optimization urges website owners and online business owners to provide their websites with relevant and informative content. Furthermore, it discourages overloading your website with several web pages that are not important at all. If you can’t just give your site visitors the information they need, why still bother getting them to visit your website in the first place?
The web pages of your website must be convincing enough to convert your site visitors to customers. They must be designed specifically to attract site visitors to purchase your products or services. To create a convincing web page, you must incorporate elements that will gradually create trust from your visitors.
Key To Successful Search Engine Optimization
Contrary to what other webmasters believe, search engine optimization is never about getting loads of keywords for your website. It is neither about overloading the website with numerous web pages that contain nothing relevant to your target market.
Search engine optimization is about optimizing your web pages for the most targeted keywords, keyword phrases and search terms. Furthermore, it is about creating relevant web pages and content that will be beneficial to your target market. Search engine optimization is not just about giving your website higher traffic; it should also increase your website’s conversion rate.

Google Has Just Updated, How Did You Fair?
Posted on February 11, 2007
In the last week I have noticed that Google has done a ranking update. A ranking update is not to be mistaken for a PR (Page Rank) update. Page Rank and Ranking are indeed 2 different animals. As far as I am concerned Page Rank and Ranking have no meeting ground, although some will argue. In this latest ranking update I have made some observations. As with most updates there are many cries of unfair, complete disappearances. Same old, same old, webmasters screaming about thier sites that have been holding top ten ranking for years suddenly disappeared from the Google index. I don’t mean losing a few notches, I mean complete disappearance. I am a webmaster that administers to well over 100 websites every day. Some of these sites are my own while others are clients.
The Current Ranking Vibes Seem to be About:
- +950 penalty
- MSSA penalty (My Site Sucks Ass)
- -30 penalty
- -388 penalty
One factor that is often overlooked in the rage is the net is becoming much more competitive, sites are being added to the net every day at unprecedented rates. Spammers are still out of control and are the main root cause of Google having to take such action. It doesn’t matter what I do with any of the websites I admin to when they hit a certain point in serps they also become a huge target for spammers. It becomes a job in itself to manage spam, particularly with blogs.
I Got Banned From Google and Here’s How I got Back in
In 1999, I built my first website WePrintColour.com. Having little to no SEO knowledge I just built the site the way I wanted to build it, good page titles, unique Meta tags and unique content. In 2000, I realized that more people (in the US) were searching for “Color” instead of “Colour” so I registered WePrintColor.com and built a website that was basically a clone of the weprintcolour.com, the only difference being the spelling of “Color”. In 2001 weprintcolor.com became a top ten ranked site for one of the main products we specialize in “business cards”. From 2001 to 2004 this site steadily climbed the se ranks and did very well. In 2004, I applied to Google AdSense and was accepted. I began to monetize my site very effectively through this program.
AdSense earnings
As you can see in 2004-2005 AdSense was producing some very attractive additional income. In 2005-2006 AdSense earnings have steadily declined. Today, I use Adsense for nothing more that an SEO tool. When I see earnings are improving it is usually a good indicator that I am on the right track. I doubt I will ever see the kind of income that I once did because I don’t focus on this as a prime source of revenue. During the good days, I did not think for a moment that AdSense could produce this kind of income. The truth is riding the AdSense wave in 2004/ 2005 was surprising to me and a great bonus that I never counted on. However, my gut feel was one of uncertainly so I never included this income in any of my planning. Today, there are the elite few that are making 4, 5 and 6 digits of monthly income with AdSense, still but if your prime source of revenue was planned based on selling mainstream products and services, stick with it. The few that are successfully making this kind of money have a greater knowledge base then most with internet marketing and put allot of hours in. That is my advice to any mainstream webmaster “do not count on AdSense earnings”. Just enjoy it while it lasts, hopefully forever. Remain focused of your original objectives.
Recap- The Last year of Google Monumental Updates
In Jan 2006 Jagger updates began. These updates seemed to unfold in 3 separate parts 1, 2 and 3, followed by the infamous Big Daddy update. After all the dust settled my favorite search engine, Google, dropped me like a hot potato. Did I lose a few ranks? No, it was a complete banned by Google. Ranking- gone, Pr6- gone, amazing AdSense earnings-gone. Why? At the time I can recall thousands of webmasters playing the same song I was playing. The answer for me was MSSA (I think that’s hilarious)! I have 2 sites that are clones; really…Google’s engineers got me.
I found myself having to stand as far back as possible and take a look at my realm of websites that I am responsible for. Be honest with myself consider the MSSA penalty. Do my websites serve a real point and purpose? Do they suck? Would I recommend them to my daughters as a worthy source of information? I believe that if you look at what I am saying and take appropriate action, your websites will naturally climb the ranks. If you fall off the horse get the hell back up and ride!! What separates the children from the adults are those that can address the “Why?” honestly, accurately and quickly.

Alexa Rank: Rank: 1,650,362 | Linking In: 688 | Related Links
Summary: Paying a severe penalty from what appears like a manual ban. Likely causes: from engaging in synthetic linking, duplicate content and server hacked spam. All were resolve March 2006. I always wondered if you were banned how severe (duration) the penalty was. In this case the total ban time was 6 months. The most painful aspect of the ban (serps) remains in effect, a ban from serps. Lesson- don’t mess with tactics that clearly breach Google’s guidelines. Trust Rank is a factor now. To earn this I believe you need to pass the new “tight” Google algos along with a human review that is no secret Google includes in thier ranking algo.

What Caused the Google Ban ?
I personally believe that every successful webmaster must experiment with concepts, ideas, marketing tactics and SEO techniques.
During 2004 and 2005 I began to experiment with forms of artificial linking, content generation, my server was hacked and used to broadcast spam originating in China. I believed this to be the cause of my removal the Google index.
Some of the action we took
Over the course of 2006 we worked hard
- To create a defined uniqueness between the 2 domains
- Properly hardened and secured a new server
- Removed any participation in any link schemes
- Submitted 2 reinclusion requests with Google, completely fessing up to above infractions with corrective action taken
There are many pages in each domain because we like to be as illustrative as possible with each individual design available in our pre-made design gallery of business card templates and postcard templates. Each domain has identical file names in TLD. That is the only similarity. So you can make a business card or make a matching postcard. The 2 libraries of templates are uniquely tailored by graphic designers specifically to match each other, at the same time maintain there own identity. Each website now is unique in its own right. The process of keeping a flow of good, helpful content on weprintcolor’s blog and weprintcolours’ blog is ongoing updating with originally authored relevant, helpful, indepth information. Improvements are being made everyday to these domains. Everyday is just a tiny bit better in the right direction.
The 3 Fs- Find, Fix, File
After carefully working through these domains I also found many other possible problems such as broken links, slug pages, temporary redirects and more duped content. This has been the most challenging task online since our inception to the Ecom world in 1999. It has provided a great opportunity to learn from mistakes and has had positive impact on the quality of sites we serve up to our visitors. That’s the way anyone should see a ban or penalty…as an opportunity to improve!! Do not fret, take it personal or think its financial suicide. Determine the Why? Fix it and File.
If you were penalized because of crossing the blackhat line then keep it white. When you think of new ideas and concepts for your online business think about referring your closest friends or family to your site to enjoy the value it has. By simply having an honest wholesome approach, I think you will begin to see a positive trend to your traffic from Google. It has taken me the better part of one year to begin to sense that something postive is happening with my flagship domains. I am not going to lie and say that I don’t experiment anymore because I do. The experiments I conduct always come down to my children. I am blessed with 2 smart, healthy daughters (ages 8 and 14) and any project I play with must have point, purpose and value.
There is no guarantee with your placement in serps, don’t make the mistake of thinking you own your rank. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you don’t, nor does anyone else! Moreover, don’t be a cry baby about it when you suffer a ban or penalty. Assume it will happen one day, because it will. In 3 easy steps you can probably do yourself more good by:
- Find it
- Fix it
- File Reinclusion
If you have something you feel I’ve missed in my analasys or a similar situation please feel free to comment.
Good luck in your quest!

AdWords Instantly
Posted on February 8, 2007
Have you noticed the listings that are placed on a better position in a search engine result page? These listings are on a more visible position because they are paid listings. Many search engines today – especially the major search engines – accept paid listing.
Paid listings have captured the interest of many webmasters and web marketing experts due to its many benefits. Here are some of the most relevant benefits of a paid listing:
• Paid listing allows your website and ads to appear instantly on the search engine result pages or SERPs.
• Paid listing places your website on a more visible area on the search results.
• Paid listing lets you choose the keywords, keyword phrases and search terms to associate with your website or ads.
• Paid listing lets you control the amount you pay for the appearance of your website and ads.
One of the major search engines that accept paid listing is Google. Its paid listing program is known as Google AdWords. Aside from Google, other popular search engines like Yahoo and MSN also encourages webmasters and web advertisers to try their paid listings programs.
Google AdWords
Google places its paid listings on a highly visible area of its search result pages or SERPs. It can either be located above the free listings or on the right hand side. Either position makes your ads more visible to the online searchers.
Google calls its paid listing program as Google AdWords. This advertising program is commonly known as AdWords alone among webmasters, web marketing specialists and online advertisers. Why will webmasters and web marketing advertisers use Google AdWords. One reason is immediate visibility and appearance of the ads and the website on Google search result pages.
Google’s free listing may take some time before your website will actually appear live. As a solution to this, Google allows webmasters and web promoters to have the opportunity to be listed the fast way. However, this instant website visibility cost an amount – thus, it is called a paid listing.
Google AdWords Charges
How much does Google charge its AdWords users? Is it a large amount? Actually it is not. Google charges its AdWords advertisers an activation fee of $5. And the rest of the charges all depend on the advertisers.
Google allows webmasters and AdWords users to determine the amount they want to pay for their ads. This is done through bidding. You bid for the keywords you want to associate with your ads. Basically, in terms of charging, Google gives you the flexibility of choice. Just a reminder, do not bid for an amount that you can’t maintain. Remember that you will be paying for that amount in every click that your paid listing receives.
Other than Google AdWords, there are still more paid listing opportunities online. There is Yahoo’s Overture and MSN Paid Listing Program. The choice depends on you. These are all good site visibility opportunities.

Print and Web Advertising Strengths and Weaknesses
Posted on February 2, 2007
People involved with advertising often wonder if print advertising going to become obsolete. Have you ever wondered why print advertising in print media can deliver such poor results? The answer to this is doing a little homework on demo graphics. For example, when your company decides to do a targeted mailing advertisement, make sure it is exactly that “Targeted”. Go to your local post office or look it up online. Find out who lives in your targeted area. Where are the highest income groups living? What ethnic culture are they? What are you trying to sell them? Prepare yourself as best as you can! Try to get to know your groups much the same as you get to know your peers. When you find a formula that works, remember exposure and repetition!
Once upon a time Yellow Page Advertising was the most effective form of advertising. This was because logically, when someone picked up the yellow pages they were ready to make a purchase. Today, more and more folks are turning to the internet to find reliable suppliers. In today’s business climate one must think multi dimensional and explore the possibilities of integrating print and web media advertising. There are some2 basic differences between the 2 forms of advertising.
- Print Advertising- Once printed is etched in stone and cannot be changed. It remains the most portable, highest quality method to transport and communicate to others. Typical examples of print advertisements include flyers, newspaper ads, brochures, reports, business cards, stationery, instructions, etc. In print media, space is limited by the budgetary cost of production and circulation.
- Web Advertising- Advertising can be placed immediately via PPC websites like Google, permission email campaigns, listing, directories, and guides. Unlike print advertising nothing is etched in stone. Today you can be offering marbles for 25 cents and tomorrow you can be offering marbles for 79 cents. Depending on how you advertise your reach potential is virtually unlimited, especially if you really have a truly amazing offer.
We will not get into the finer point but keep this general.
When advertising with print media you can print a web address that is a location to a landing page. This is a great way to integrate the 2 forms and gauge your response. Make sure you have a special tailor made for those that are responding to your print ad. Now that we have lightly touched upon online websites using print ads, and why you would want to do it, why not start today? Add these two forms of advertising cleverly into your marketing mix.

I have chosen these sites because they don’t really try to sell goods but rather provide entertainment value with a great design or idea. In each case these sites can be seen as unique and innovative. You will also note that they visitor that lands on the site has been planned out. By planning what your visitor is going to do based on their interest your can magnify the worthiness of each visitor.
Some other forms of popular advertising are outdoor advertising, signs on buses, transit systems and billboard advertising. Try to imagine for a minute, www.yourwebsite.com printed on a billboard in one of the highest traffic areas. Would that be effective? Again, how we will answer that question is by monitoring the statistics and conversion rates to the website. After a set period of time we will sit at the table and review the results. The monetary results are not as important as building a list of subscribers which will build trust over time and make for a long term relationship. Use this two-fold approach to help earn the business and trust of your future prospects, it will go along way!
The strength of web advertising is its flexibility. On the other hand, print’s media’s draw back is also its strength and permanence. I personally like to use print advertising for launching my great idea and web advertising to propel it. I have no doubt in my mind that combining the 2 will optimize any advertising campaign’s bottom line. Once I have my visitor on my website I like to show them more on my great idea and lots more on several good related ideas. Remember, when initiating your print advertisement to include your website address in order to promote your business, products or services in an optimum fashion.
The Difference Between Ads for the Web and Print
Designing within the constraints of html is far more restricted then print ads. When you layout a print ad, you can design without limitation of resolution or placement of objects and text. With html the language in color is different, everybody’s monitor is different, browser settings vary and so on. These, and many other factors will influence the way your web advertisement is viewed. With print, the only interpretation is the human eye. Your finished ads are always seen exactly as printed. Most advertising campaigns today will include both forms of advertising; working with a graphic designer that has a high level of comprehension of both is highly recommended in order to keep consistency in your style. With many of the ads I receive everyday; the problem is they lack focus and a defined message. It is no secret to keep your ad simple and to the point, but we also need to know when to reveal the fine details when requested. There is no better way then to program your website to respond to this need when called upon. So take a close look at your company’s advertising and give your readers a reason to do something by having a call to action on your website.
